Judge David Newell

Judge David NewellJudge David Newell serves on the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, the court of last resort for criminal cases in Texas. Prior to his election in 2015, Judge Newell served as an assistant district attorney for seventeen years, first at the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office and later at the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. In his career, he appeared before both the Court of Criminal Appeals and the Texas Supreme Court. Additionally, he assisted in briefing before the United States Supreme Court in the case Salinas v. Texas. He is a frequent presenter on the significant criminal cases from the United States Supreme Court and the Court of Criminal Appeals for the State Bar of Texas as well as the Texas District and County Attorneys Association. Judge Newell received his undergraduate degree from the University of Houston and his J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law. He is board certified in both criminal law and criminal appellate law.
